Aquaman - quelor - 03-28-2019

I gave up after 45 minutes.  Probably my least favorite from all the glut of super hero movies.

I think I must have gotten some sort of cursed monkey's paw when I was a kid and just don't remember making the wish that "every comic book super hero would get his own movie and that there would be a new Star Wars movie every year" and much like the kid trapped over night in his favorite candy store, I got exactly what I wished for to the point of realizing beyond any shadow of a doubt precisely why the term 'ad nauseam' was coined.

I only watch superhero stuff when it makes it to TV. I then watch it ironically with beer. Was never really into comics, except the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Now that's a movie I would watch. Not been stoned for years, but might have to recidivise under those circs. And recidivise is a word.

My dad was a comic collector. I grew up with a huge library of comics at my disposal. I gravitated towards Dr. Strange and Batman. They were the only ones that made sense in my child brain. Batman had no powers, just fists and money.. that made sense. Dr. Strange used magic, so you don't need logic. Superman made no sense to me. If he flies... what propels him? Spiderman? if his hands and feet stick to walls, how does it work when his costume engulfs them the whole time? The Hulk? ...when he gets giant, where does the extra meat and bone come from? Where does it go when he calms down?

My dad did instill a respect for good comic work though. The old 'Prince Valiant' comics were the high watermark of quality comic art. Jack Kirby was the best 60s pop-art comic artist. He kept them in a wooden chest that always looked like a pirate treasure chest to me as a kid. So even though I only ever bought a couple of comic books in my life, there's still a soft spot in my heart for the concept.

I read comic books growing up, mostly around the X-Men and its sister mutant books. It seems like another time when the Avengers and its various members were B listers in the comic world. (It's not an accident that the only rights that Marvel had when they started their studio were to the characters they hadn't been able to sell to Sony or Fox). I think I've seen every Marvel movie either in the theater or vod, though, because I just love movies and will watch any genre (although I can sympathize that it's such a glut of super heroes). I don't think I've been awed or overwhelmed by any of them. "Logan" was probably my favorite, but of course that was a Fox film made by an accomplished director.

If you have Amazon Prime, I highly recommend The Tick. A parody... and season 1 was a little shaky (looked cheap, story was all about putting the pieces in place to start the actual story, etc) but season 2 so far has been a great spoof of what 'live action comic book' stuff has turned in to.

I used to LOVE the The Tick cartoon back in the mid 90s! Haven't tried the reboot because the 2001 attempt at a live action left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll check it out.

HUGE fan of the old cartoon myself.  While I don't think this is quite as good as that, it is a big improvement over the 90s version.  Like I said though, it doesn't really come in to it's own until Season 2
