Myself, I don't like to be afraid of anything. Makes me feel like I'm living life incorrectly. I will say, I am extremely concerned about the way things are going. I don't think global warming is a falsehood or liberal conspiracy. I also feel that we've lost the grim sanctuary of 'mutual assured destruction' when it comes to nuclear arms. I think it's an inevitability that someone who thinks 'God' approves of their actions will come into possession of a nuclear weapon.
Then I see the other side. People who think concern is ridiculous. They often cite history and the fact that people have been concerned with the end of civilization countless times in the past and it never happened. I see how it's logical to them but to me it just sounds like someone saying, "The doctor keeps telling me cigarettes will give me cancer. Well, I've smoked hundreds of them and not one gave me cancer." Saying the risks you've taken have had no repercussions in no way means there will NEVER be any. It just means you've been lucky so far.
I guess I'm not frightened that our future will probably be a lot more 'Mad Max' than 'Star Trek.' Just very disappointed.

So, I'm not a big TV guy but the wife has started watching a cop show starring David Tennant called 'Broadchurch.' One of those 'pick something at random off of Netflix' kind of situations. It started out with her watching while I surf the internet but after a couple of episodes I started watching too. One thing I thought made it far superior to American crime shows is that the actors looked like regular people. Tennant's partner is played by Olivia Coleman... who looks like a person you might work with. In America male detectives can look like anything but all female detectives look like models.
We haven't finished the first season yet and I'm already starting to lose it though. The show takes place in what looks to be a very small town but somewhere in the area of 97% of it's citizens are INCREDIBLY suspicious. Specifically in the one, single crime the show seems to be focused on. I notice there's another two seasons (series) after this. Is this supposed to be an incredibly seedy town or are English seaside towns just loaded to the gills with shady characters? I've been to England a few times but the only time I was near the sea was Yarmouth. The only thing I found suspicious about the people there was simply the sheer number of them that appeared to be cousins of my wife.

So I was listening to two young colleagues (early 20s) the other day moaning about the world they live in. Both "had" to borrow money from their parents to get a deposit to buy their houses. One is still having to drive the car their parents bought them because they can't afford a brand new one yet. Both are paying what I consider a fortune for the latest iphone, Netflix, Sky, etc. etc. and moaning about the expense.
Now I don't want to go all Four Yorkshiremen on you, but when I was their age I rented a flat because I could not yet afford a deposit, I had a bike because I could not afford a car, I used a phone box because I could not afford to have a phone installed, and a b&w telly because the licence was cheaper (and thought I was flash for having a TV at all). Once I had reached adulthood, it never would have crossed my mind to expect my parents to give me a penny towards anything.
It's not that the youth of today have so much more than I did that bothers me, I probably had more than my parents did. It's that they expect it all as their right. I am very glad I never bred, as my kids would be miserable impoverished social outcasts who hated me.
OK, I'M sorry I've probably bequeathed them an uninhabitable planet and all, but please.....
