We are an odd nation on this side of the pond. Nationally, bigotry is doing quite well. On the local level though, things seem to be going the other way. I turned on the local news while I had my morning coffee to see that Chicago here has elected it's first openly lesbian, black mayor.
Her dad was a janitor and her mom was a health care aid. She worked multiple jobs to pay her own way through law school. I think Chicago may have elected the Anti-Trump

This guy is just the dumbest bag of rocks ever. He has his best day ever in office on Sunday (although the actual report is still pending) and instead of trying to keep it going, he decides to go after health care and funding of the Special Olympics. What kind of special moron does that?
He already lost on health care, and the provision on pre-existing conditions is a third rail that will get him and his party pummeled in 2020, if their non-existent plan tries to do away with it. And who goes after the Special Olympics?
I can't even with this guy. I think I'd rather have the Brexit mess.

I stay away from the computer on the weekends. I'm going to have a drink or three on the train home tonight. Tomorrow I'm going to drive north along Lake Michigan until I find a restaurant that looks interesting and Sunday I think I'll pick up a new guitar.
See you guys Monday

OK, this may seem odd but I'm perplexed by soda. Specifically attitudes towards it. I suppose part of it stems from growing up without it (my dad was a bit of a 70s health nut type but on top of that he was cheap as hell. He took 5 tea packets, put them in a pot of boiling water and filled a pitcher, put it in the fridge and with every meal we drank iced tea. No sugar, no chemicals and dirt cheap.)
There's been talk lately about how unhealthy Coke, Pepsi (etc) and even their diet versions are. The reactions I'm seeing over here are, "Oh well. You have to have some pleasures in life." In Chicago, the city is crumbling because we're out of money. Our last mayor tried imposing a soda tax and people acted as if he'd tried to fund the city with the blood of everyone's firstborn. I am perplexed. People are getting seriously worked up over carbonated sugar water.
Don't get me wrong, I will have the occasional soda. Maybe once every three or four months I'll go to the movies... get a popcorn and a soda. Sometimes I'll have a whiskey with coke but I see people who have one with lunch every day. Is that just an American thing? Is soda the American tea?
